The first few new blades of grass in April…a crisp and tart Granny Smith apple…and even Curtain Call Creations’ logo. All of these things came to mind when we saw Pantone’s new color of 2017. Greenery, described on Pantone’s website as “a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring; Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings”. It evokes feelings of life, nature, and growth. Quite an inspirational color to welcome a new year!
Every year, Pantone chooses a color of the year. Why do they choose colors of the year, you might wonder? In their words, it is a “symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude”. Their colors help to marry a variety of industries, from designers, manufacturers, retailers, and you: the customer. Pantone provides a communication across fashion, architecture, photography, and more—all using color.
In the early 1960s, the graphic arts community faced challenges concerning accurate color matching. Pantone’s founder, Lawrence Herbert, recognized that the problem was that each person sees and recognizes the color spectrum differently. Taking that into account, he created a system that can be used to identify, match and communicate color: the Pantone Matching System. It’s a book of standardized color in fan format utilized across trades to create ink, paint, apparel, home furnishings, textiles, and paper, among other things.
Shades of greens are nature’s neutrals. Greenery can be incorporated into so many design schemes because of that. Incorporating some new plant life into a corner of your home not only naturally filters the air; it also brings a fresh look in an easy way. Seeing a pop of that yellow-green in new throw pillows or a piece of art is another way to evoke the revitalizing color into your space.
