Dec 15, 2015Choosing the Right Area Rug

Area rugs help bring a space together and unify the furnishings. They add visual interest and make your room feel complete. From a functional perspective, they can help warm spaces with hardwood or tile flooring. Finding the perfect area rug for your room or space can be challenging, but we are here to help.

The first thing to consider when choosing an area rug is the size necessary. A rug that’s too small for the space will look dwarfed and out of place. For living and dining areas, furniture should, at minimum, touch the outside of the rug. In dining areas, it’s even better if all of the chair legs can rest on the rug when it’s pulled out. One of the biggest rug faux-pas is arranging furniture around a rug with none, or only a coffee table, actually resting on the rug.

Next you must decide on what color and style to choose. You probably have a good idea of what style you’re after, whether it’s farmhouse, traditional, contemporary or another style. A geometric print rug may look fantastic in a contemporary or modern space, but would be completely out of place in a farmhouse-style home. Note the colors and designs and texture of your furniture and textiles. A room with a variety of prints incorporated would do best with a subtle rug. Alternately, a room with less contrast can greatly benefit from featuring an area rug with pops of color.

There are a variety of methods used to create area rugs, ranging from prestigious hand-knotted rugs to mass produced machine-made rugs. The way your rug is manufactured has a big impact on the cost. Handmade rugs are far more durable than their machine-made counterparts. They’re typically made from natural fibers that don’t release harmful gasses into the environment. Hand-knotted rugs, also known as Oriental rugs, can last for generations; they retain their value well, and therefore are a much better value. Less expensive mass produced rugs may be a better choice if you’re choosing a style that may be considered dated in a short amount of time.

Choosing the perfect area rug can be a daunting process, much like other aspects of decorating your home. For help selecting the perfect rug for your space, call today for a no obligation appointment in your home or office! 630.737.1510
