Nov 15, 2018Make Your House Smell Like Fall!

Have you ever gone into someone’s home and the smell was so fantastic you wished your own home could smell the same way? If so, you’ve come to the right place! We have several ideas and concoctions that will make your home smell absolutely wonderful this fall season. This is one DIY that is super easy. The best part? These options are free of the synthetic fragrances that many scented products contain (read: harsh artificial chemicals).

Oranges and cinnamon or apple and cloves are perfect complimentary fall scents that bring to mind crisp leaves beneath your feet, cool breezes, and warm sweaters. Research shows that smell is one of the most effective triggers of memory, even more so than sight or sound. While there are plenty of scented products on the market that smell like pumpkin spice or warm apple pie, one needs to be careful, as these may contain harmful chemicals that can compromise your health. Many scented sprays, plug-ins, and scented candles contain ingredients that have been linked to asthma, hormone disruption, and cancer, to name a few. A safer alternative is to make your own scents, either using essential oils in a diffuser, or with a simmer pot. Read on for our top four favorite recipes!

Orange & Cinnamon Simmer Pot:

Ingredients: 2 Full Orange Peels, 2 Cinnamon Sticks

Instructions: Fill a small saucepan with water, add ingredients, and bring to a boil. Once boiling, turn down to medium heat (or whatever temp is best for simmering). Simmer for 20-25 minutes, and then add more water. I recommend simmering for about 45 minutes total so the smell can last, but you can simmer longer if you’d like. Just remember to keep adding water! I like to imagine that the Big Bad Wolf probably had this one on the stove to convince Little Red Riding Hood that he was her granny. Perfect for the Halloween season.

Apple Peels, Cloves & Vanilla Simmer Pot: :

Ingredients: Peels from 2 Apples, Several Whole Cloves, 2 Vanilla Beans

Instructions: See boiling to simmering process in the saucepan listed out above, but substitute these ingredients. This one will be reminiscent of a wonderful day at the apple orchard with your loved ones. You’ll probably want to don a flannel and have some warm cider by a fire. You’ve been warned.

Orange, Lavender & Eucalyptus Essential Oil Blend: :

Ingredients: Essential Oils—Orange, Lavender, and Eucalyptus

Instructions: Add 2 drops of each to an essential oil diffuser and add water. Press start, or follow instructions of your diffuser to begin process. Within moments your room will smell fantastic. This recipe is especially great if you have that cold that seems to ALWAYS be going around every fall. Especially use this recipe if your significant other has that cold. Because theirs is always “sooooo much worse than yours was”. Be both selfish and thoughtful all in one.

Pumpkin Pie Essential Oil Blend: :

Ingredients: Essential Oils—Cardamom, Cinnamon Bark/Cassia, Orange, Clove

Instructions: Add 4 drops of Cardamom, 2 drops of Cinnamon Bark/Cassia, 1 drop of Orange, and 1 drop of Clove to an essential oil diffuser and add water. Press start. Fool your friends into thinking you baked. Really, you bought that pie from the store and spent your afternoon getting a manicure and having a pumpkin spice latte. So you’re “basic”. We won’t tell.
