I’ve heard vitamin D referred to as the “Sunshine Vitamin” many times, but never gave it much thought…until now. Vitamin D is comprised of D-1, D-2 and D-3, and is produced naturally in our bodies when our skin is directly exposed to sunlight. We can also get it through the foods we eat and if needed, through supplements.
Since I promised myself to make 2019 a happy and healthier year; I started it out right, with getting that overdue “annual physical.” I was surprised to learn that I’m in short supply of vitamin D!
Apparently I’m not alone, as there are thousands of people living in the Midwest who are also low in this essential vitamin.
It’s ESSENTIAL, because it’s so important! Getting a sufficient amount of vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium and phosphorous, which aids in normal growth of bones and teeth, and helps prevent developing Osteoporosis.
I thought I was getting enough vitamin D from the foods I eat, and then I learned there are factors that can affect these levels, such as:
- Spending more time indoors, than outdoors
- Heavy application of sunscreen
- Having darker skin (higher levels of melanin reduces absorption through the skin)
- Age (older than 60)
- Living in areas with high pollution
- Being overweight
- Eating a diet low in vitamin D
- Having digestion issues
The only way to be sure if you are getting an adequate amount of vitamin D is to have your doctor test your blood. I’m glad I kept my promise to start my year off in a positive direction… I need my bones to stay healthy…I still have a lot of traveling to do!
